Clearly there is a current fascination in the underground with “dark” death metal and, perhaps partly for this reason, there has been great demand for a reissue of this demo material. (Note that this release contains only three of the four demos—the first demo being intentionally omitted.) The music of this legendary Canadian band is not merely dark, however. It is possessed with a genuine atmosphere of violence and perpetual terror that is arguably unmatched in the realm of pure death metal either before or since. For years these recordings have been praised and referenced largely due to Cremation drummer J. Read’s success with Conqueror, Revenge, and Axis of Advance. To those familiar with Read’s work, it will come as no surprise that the drums in Cremation do not simply keep time; rather, the drums are every bit as active as the guitars and vocals. In this way, the entire force of the band is leveled upon the listener simultaneously and the result is punishing. Each instrument contributes equally to the onslaught. The recording itself is simple and sparse, yet the overall effect is one of tremendous strength due entirely to the frenetic activity of the performance. The essence at the core of Cremation’s work is pure Satanic fury and virtually no death metal band from their era captured that fury so effectively as Cremation. Indeed, it can convincingly be argued that Cremation were far ahead of their time as one can hear the distinct influence of their unique style in the work of many of the new death metal bands of today. The three demos presented here, “Pire Gah Hoath Raclir Od Ialpor,” “Hail The Rise of Med Pe Gal,” and “The Flames of an Elite Age” vary slightly in their presentation, yet have a magnificent effect when heard in conjunction with each other. Each assault builds upon the intensity of the last and the cumulative effect is catastrophic. These demos depict the turning point at which one can hear the dying gasp of the last vestiges of pure death metal as the influx of black metal influence was about to permanently alter the landscape of the underground. Cremation’s sound exists at the precipice of this sonic and conceptual shift and represents the extremity attained only at the outer limits of the boundaries that demarcate the style known as death metal.

“Outre” is an album drenched in filth, disgust, raw other-worldly mire, unforgiving surrealism, and pure unbridled horror, a scenario in which some might indeed find hard to grasp. It really a primitive precursor to the idea of neurons firing in a chain, containing ideas. So that's what people will find if they do a little research about the title.”
Going further into the themes of the album, Scalzi elaborates: “The content of the record is (subject wise) is not too far from usual SLOUGH FEG material. The first two songs are about Medieval Catholic theology. Then it switches to basic horror themes, a couple of songs about some insane person who thinks he's a vampire, and then a werewolf (inspired by the Gothic soap-opera ‘Dark Shadows’) then there's one of our weird ‘what if Dicky Betts of the Allman Brothers had joined Iron Maiden in 1980’ instrumentals. Then a few more songs about frustration, misery and madness, and a final fast, driving rock/metal number called ‘Tactical Air-War’, which will be sung by Bob Wright of Brocas Helm!”

The return of doom metal legends YOB sees Mike Scheidt and co. deliver the pinnacle Yob album. “The Great Cessation” marks the return of one of the most respected doom metal bands today resulting in one of the most triumphant moments in doom metal to be heard all year.
After the many trials and tribulations Scheidt had to endure concerning his previous pre-resurrected Yob band (in which we, along with Schedit, are technically not allowed to mention because of legalities – but you should know who they are obviously), it was natural that Schedit (along with longtime Yob drummer Travis Foster and new bass player Aaron Reiseberg) would inevitably pen the heaviest, darkest, and most oppressive sounding Yob album to date.
Recorded and produced by Sanford Parker, who has given Yob their best production/sounding album to date, “The Great Cessation” also sees Yob deliver their most varied sounding album. With the behemoth-like monolithically paced traditional “cosmic” doom sounds that have helped define Yob’s sound over the years (along with the band’s tendencies to write songs that average ten minutes in length) which continue to resonate on “The Great Cessation”, Yob also incorporate new elements that give “The Great Cessation” a pummeling energetic vibe like no other Yob album, while at the same time, delivering even more plunging abysmal dirge-like histrionics that go so far as to even render moments on “The Great Cessation” as blasphemous and evil (as in the track “Silence Of Heaven”). In true Yob tradition, the album ends with the 20-minute title track (what some have even dubbed the Yob ballad!) which ends the album in that surging victorious moment; in the most epic of moments.

But with “Atma” the Eugene, Oregon three-piece, led by vocalist guitarist Mike Scheidt, have unleashed a new level of dynamics and depth with an album in which many will call the band’s magnum opus.
Transcending (there’s that word again) the foreboding darkness and oppression that was “The Great Cessation”, “Atma” sees YOB continue their soul searching cycle of reaching that higher state of being through five crushing spiritually levitating tracks of pure doom metal mastery. The word “Atma” is defined as the existence of the core of the soul and that the highest value of knowledge comes from one’s true self. In turn, “Atma” is the culmination of YOB’s career that has reached a current self-reflective peak in their musical journey.
